TACTILE SENSITIVY OF WOMEN COMPETITIVE SPORTS IN AESTHESIOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to specify the sensitivity of the tactile analyser to the effect of specialist training.Material and methods. The total of 185 athletes doing water sports, team sports games, combat sports, athletics and swimming took part in the study. The control group consisted of 142 women who did not take part in competitive sport. The subjects' age ranged from 19 to 23 years. The Touch-TestTM Sensory Evaluator aesthesiometer was used for the study. The tactile sensitivity threshold (TST) was measured in two points of the hand: on the pulp of the tittle finger and on the metacarpus. Identifying the tactile threshold involved using an aesthesiometer filament of the smallest pressure force that the subjects were able to feel.Results. The highest tactile sensitivity on the small finger was displayed by female swimmers, and on the metacarpus by female athletes doing combat sports. The lowest tactile sensitivity in two measurement points was noted in athletes doing waster sports. In all studied groups the metacarpus was characterised by a lower tactile sensitivity.Conclusions. Physical activity, specific for a given sport discpline, is the reason for variability of threshold tactile sensitivity. Tactile sensitivity is modified by use of sports gear and requisites, training and competition in water environment, sensitisation of tactile receptors to perception of physical stimuli coming from external environment.
