Technologies of bioresorbable medical products developed within the Framework of the project „Biodegradable fibrous products”

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2014, Vol 68, Issue 8

Abstract

At the end of 2008, the realization of the key project entitled „Biodegradable fibrous products”, POIG 01.03.01–00–007/08, also referred to using BIOGRATEX acronym, was started. The project is co-financed from structural funds within the framework of the Innovative Economy Programme. The aim of the project is to develop innovative technological solutions, essential for extending the offer of fibrous materials manufactured on the basis of biodegradable polymers, mostly obtained from renewable raw materials, addressed not only to the textile industry sector, but also to agriculture and medicine. The aim of the presented paper is to describe three technologies allowing obtaining products designed for applications in regenerative medicine. The technology of forming fibres from the polymer solution containing a copolymer of L-lactide and glycolide (PGLA), the synthesis of which has been developed within the framework of the project, is described. Another presented technology concerns nanofibrous material manufactured by electrospinning from PGLA polymer solution and from the solution containing a mixture of polymers – PGLA and hydroxybutyrate (PHB). Both polymer solutions in DMSO were spun with the addition of hydroxyapatite (HAp). The resultant fibrous material was designed for application in regeneration of osseous tissue, as an osteoconductive, osteoinductive and bioresorbable material. The third technology described in this paper refers to production of PGLA bioresorbable vascular prostheses below 6 mm in diameter. The potential application of polymer melt electrospinning technique with introduction of additional thermal stabilization process for manufacturing lowdiameter 3D structures is presented.
