Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42

Abstract

The September 1980 Turkish military coup was closely followed by the British. Especially, by starting from the period before the military coup, the British Embassy in Ankara informed the British officials about the developments in Turkey during the coup stage. Particularly, in the day of 12 September, by working intensively, the British Embassy carefully observed the situation in Turkey and made a great effort not to miss any important developments. From this perspective, by searching the British archive, this study analysed the British government policy in this process. In this connection, it was shown that what extent the British Embassy in Ankara had knowledge about Turkey’s internal issues. As related to this point, it was indicated that what extent the British Embassy’s reports from Turkey became effective in shaping British policy towards Turkey.
