Journal Title: Scholars Journal of Economics, Business and Management - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 3

Abstract

Indonesia is the worst affected country in the Asian region in terms of earthquakes, tsunami and other allied natural calamities. Apart from this, Indonesian forests have been threatened by factors such as deforestation. The deforestation management is the major issue in the tropical countries that have a big role in forest product and climate change in the whole world. The present study attempted to identify the impact of reforming rules on deforestation management which results from a myriad of factors such as forest fires, exchange for agricultural purpose, logging intensity, mining and transmigration in Indonesia and its surrounding islands in order to predict the parameters for the next three years. Furthermore, the patterns of deforestation due to the above influencing factors have been completely investigated. For that purpose, secondary data were collected from forestry ministry in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, over the period between 2001 and 2010. The results revealed that management and reforming rules were major players and lead to crucial roles in the progress of diminishing deforestation during the last decade since there was a declining trend in deforestation rate not only in Indonesia as a whole but also in the vulnerable islands of Indonesia. Keywords: Deforestation, Forest degradation, Logging Intensity, Transmigration.
