The alterations of non-specific and specific cellular immunity in acute pancreatitis

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 3

Abstract

Acute pancreatitis represents a local inflammatory disorder with severe systemic consequences. Multiple organ failure and sepsis in the late phase contribute to the high mortality of severe acute pancreatitis. In order to optimize therapy, it is crucial to recognize patients at risk of developing severe acute pancreatitis.Variety of immunocytes are involved in the process of pancreatitis as well as in the systemic spread of disease leading to severe organ dysfunction. Control of their function could be an important strategy for improvement of the clinical outcome in severe acute pancreatitis. The review focuses on the current knowledge about human cellular immunity in acute pancreatitis. The informations about status of neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes in the inflammatory cascade in pancreatitis, may provide clues for valuable predictors of disease severity or markers for progression of acute pancreatitis, as well as strategies for treatment improvement.
