THE ALTERNATIVE STORY OF LORD BYRON’S GRAND TOUR IN THE NOVEL BY TOM HOLLAND THE VAMPYRE: BEING THE TRUE PILGRIMAGE OF GEORGE GORDON, SIXTH LORD BYRON

Abstract

The main aim of the article is to analyze the original interpretation of Byron‟s Grand Tour story offered in the novel The Vampyre: Being the True Pilgrimage of George Gordon, Sixth Lord Byron by Tom Holland. This famous contemporary British author works in the genre of vampire horror stories and simultaneously writes books based on serious scientific research. So, the characteristic feature of his style is the interweaving of the actual historical information with invented details. The novel under consideration is based on the assumption that Lord Byron could by a vampire. This fact could explain some vague episodes in the biography of the great poet. The author concentrates on the period in Byron‟s life when he was on his Grand Tour and visited Greece. The writer masterfully works with the documents connected with the life and creative activity of George Byron. He inserts fictional episodes into the actual account of the events and transforms the readers understanding of the reasons for the changes in Lord Byron‟s behavior. Tom Holland uses a lot of intertextual connections for the creation of the text. The main sources of the references are Byron‟s letters and works as well as the letters and private journals of his closest friends and relatives (J. Hobhouse, T. Moore). At the same time, Tom Holland actively works with the stories written by John Polidory, Caroline Lamb and others
