THE ASSESSMENT OF TESTOSTERONE AND CORTISOL CONCENTRATION CHANGES INFLUENCED BY PHYSICAL EFFORT IN REGULARLY TRAINING MEN - COMMANDOS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. Commandos belong to a group of people submitted to special physical and psychological loads. Cortisol (C) and testosterone (T) and the two most frequently assayed steroid hormones in sportsmens' blood in periods of intensive training. Deficiency of these hormones impairs the ability to perform single, long-lasting efforts and decrease tolerance to training loads. The aim of the study was to evaluate physical efficiency in commandos subjected to maximal physical effort and to assess testosterone and cortisol concentration changes.Material and methods. The research involved 15 commandos aged 28.8+/-3.6 years. They underwent exercise test with increasing load until refusal.Results. Cortisol and testosterone concentrations were determined in blood taken immediately before and after the end of the test. Initial average cortisol concentration was 416.4+/-136.1 nmol/l (p<0.01). Average testosterone concentration before the test was 14.7+/-4.9 nmol/l and after the test it increased to 17.9+/-5.5 nmol/l (p<0.01). T/C before the effort was 0.039+/- 0.016 and it decreased to 0.030+/-0.011 (p<0.001) after the test. The men were divided into a subgroup of overtrained in which relative change of T/C was greater than 30% (7 persons) and a subgroup of the others (8 persons). In the subgroup of overtrained relation between T/C changes and maximum power (r = 0.52, p<0.05) was demonstrated.Conclusions. In the subgroup of overtarined average blood cortisol increased significantly after the effort and maximum power decreased in a linear fashion together with the decrease of testosterone/cortisol ratio compared to basal level.
