The battle in the Kerch Strait in July 1621: attempt to reconstruct events
Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
The article presents an attempt to reconstruct the events that took place in the Kerch Strait in late July 1621 during a battle between the Turkish fleet and the Cossack flotilla. To create a complete reconstruction, the author uses not only Turkish sources but also technical characteristics of galleys, the main ships in the Ottoman fleet (their features, weapons, number of boarding teams, the effective distance for cannons fire) and boats that were used by Cossacks. The author concludes that due to good weather conditions, Turkish warships successfully used all their advantages on the high seas, which allowed galleys to destroy the Cossacks’ flotilla. Among these preferences were greater number of large-caliber cannons, their larger fire range, three times larger number of boarding soldiers in Turkish army. Huge losses among Cossacks indicates their failure to use boats’ stealth and speed. That could be an indicator of the attempt to breakthrough forcibly. Indirectly, this authors’ hypothesis was confirmed by the battle description made by the unknown Turkish author in his «Gazaname» chronicles.
