The Chapter On Grammar In the Kitāb Mafātīḥ al-‘Ulūm

Abstract
This translated article has been written by Wolfdietrich Fischer about the chapter of Syn-tax/Nahw at Mafātīḥ al-ʿUlūm which is Al-Khwārizmī’s work. This chapter of Syntax/Nahw constitutes the third chapter of Mafātīḥ. The terms used by al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad and didn’t exist in the other sources have been analysed, and sometimes have been compared with the terms of Sībawayhi. It has also the importance as it emphasizes that the Greek philosophers’ terms and approachs about phonetics have parallelism with the Muslim’s ones. However it has been mentioned that the Greek impact on Arabic grammar have projections until the ear-lier periods of Arabic language studies. This article may be a contribution to the understan-ding of the discussions between grammar and logic which were experienced in the fourth century of the Hegira.
