The Coined Tankard (Haupt). A point of view on a supposed Transylvanian<br /> numismatic collection from the end of the 17th century

Abstract
The ”Coined Tankard” (Brukenthal Museum, inv. no. T 90/1342), called “Haupt” after the name of his commanditer, was donated to the Evangelical Church of the town Sibiu by Johannes Haupt, mayor of the town 1678/1683 and comitis of the Saxons 1683/1686. The date of the donation, the 1st January 1682, handed down to us by means of an inscription placed below the lip of the tankard probably stands for the first known mention of this day as the distinct holiday making commencement of the year in the local cultural milieu. On the lied and on the eight sides of the tankard are embedded 56 Roman and Hellenistic coins, part of them original, part of them collection forgeries or imaginary issues. The layout of the coins on the body of the tankard was carried out bearing in mind the symbols of the coin designs. The symbols seems o be tied up with the ethical values afloat among the educated Transylvanian milieu at the given time, that is the values of the late Humanism. The composition of the group of coins sacrificed for the decoration of the tankard conveys the composition of a possible numismatic collection extant in Transylvania about the year 1682. The composition of the group of Roman republican and imperial denarii, original, forged and imaginary and the fact that the denarii on the tankard are issued only up to M. Aurelius may be the consequence of the presence in the collection of a Transylvanian hoard fragment of the type ending with coins issued by M. Aurelius. It is possible that the imaginary and forged denarii might have been inspired by the original ones extant in the collection. We consider that the existence and the appearance of the “coined tankard” is a proof and at the same time a consequence of the cultural atmosphere in Transylvania in the second half of the 17th century.
