Journal Title: European Journal of Business and Social Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 7

Abstract

In this study, communication of ethnic groups with dominant culture, also conceptualized as intercultural communication. The current study aims to explore the communication practice of Syrian students, one of the ethnic groups studying at Nigde University, with the dominant culture as part of intercultural communication. For the purposes of the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve Syrian students studying at Nigde University and form snowboll sampling was used in the selection of participants. The findings were discussed on the basis of the data obtained. In the theoretical approach of the study were utilized the components of Edward T. Hall’s Information Systems Theory, Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimmensions Theory and Millton Benett’s Development Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. The results of the study revealed that Syrian students have continued to interact with the dominant culture while trying to preserve their own culture. In the study, it is accepted that each culture has different sense of the world. The results showed that these differences, which are due to cultural doctrine influenced the communication of Syrian students with the dominant culture.
