THE COMPARION OF LEVEL OF STATIC BALANCE OF THE YOUNG ICE-SKATERS WITH THEIRS UNSPORTY PEERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. Body balance plays significant role in skating sports. The balance depends largely on the base area size (which is a space between support points) and on distance of body gravity centre from this area. The aim of the study was to evaluate balance control in standing position among children systematicaly practising figure skating and to compare the results with a group of children who do not practise any sport discipline. Material and methods. The study involved 120 girls aged 10-11 years, including 60 girls who have systematically practised figure skating for two years and 60 girls who have not practised any sport discipline. The asssessment of postural balance was performed with tensometric stabilograph. Measurment time was 20 seconds. Based on obtained stabilographic curves the following parameters for the both mentioned surfaces were counted: sway area, average sway velocity, sway range, sway dispersion Results. Obtained results revealed significantly better postural balance control in standing position among children who have systematically practised figure scating. The observed differences between training and control groups were statistically significant and highly significant, and applied for all measured parameters and both surfaces.Conclusions. Assessed parameters support the statement, that children who systematicaly practise skating are characterised by better postural balance in standing position.
