The Comparison of Texts in Native Language Textbooks for 8th Grade in the Australia and in Turkey in Terms of Theme and Type: Cambridge and MEB Examples

Abstract

The aim of this research is to compare the native language (English) textbooks for 8th grades in various states in the Australia and the native language (Turkish) textbooks for 8th grades in Turkey in terms of theme/unit and text types. Sample of the study which has been done in accordance with the content analysis occurs 8 th grade textbooks which are 2016 edition and Ministry of Education publications for Turkey and Cambridge Checkpoint English course book which is 2016 edition for Australian. Two books have been examined with descriptive analysis method; and have been compared both thematically and in terms of text types Independent from the curricula or the framework programs of both countries, this study focuses only on theme/unit and text type. Since this study is aimed at determining the status, it has the nature of a descriptive study. The study is focused on mother tongue concept primarily and then the importance of textbooks in teaching the mother tongue and text selection are mentioned. In research, the similarities and differences of both countries are compared; it is thought that evaluating textbooks which are prepared with different approaches will be contribute to process of creating textbooks. Study showed that themes of English native language textbook are more interesting, updating and versatile. Also, the text types of English textbook have more in number and they are more appropriate to the themes according to Turkish textbook. As a result, Turkish native language textbook can be developed according to mentioned conclusions and suggestions.
