The Competency of Nefs According to Shahrazuri
Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 4
Abstract
Nefs is one of the main concepts underlying Shahrazuri’s way of thinking, and forms the foundation for his perspectives on metaphysics, ethics and epistemology. Although he mainly relied on Ishraki terminology to prove the existence of nefs and examine its dimensions, he was occasionally affected by Ibn Sina as well. Shahrazuri, who attributes the reason why the existence of Nefs cannot be comprehended by many to their inability to go beyond the boundaries of their body, stresses that human beings can fully know and understand themselves, and describe themselves when the compe tency of Nefs is developed. In doing so, Shahrazuri proposes two methods: ‚keşf‛, or the purification of mind, and ‚asceticism‛, that is, breaking one’s boundaries. Hence, the nefs becomes ‚wise‛ and reaches the true, concrete competency. The true competency is reinforced with Burhani knowledge and taming the instinct of enjoyment, and is attained by breaking one’s self-boundaries.
