THE COMPLEMENTARY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NATURE AND ARCHITECTURE: CLIFF AGAIN

Journal Title: PEYZAJ - Journal of Education, Science, Culture and Art - Year 2021, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Behind the unique beauty of Salacak silhouette in İstanbul are the cliffs covered with the local plant species. This image is a natural formation that is rarely seen in the world. This enormous nature, where the shore meets the land, has been cut off by the land-filled areas. The proposed design against the gray of the landfilled area is inspired by the original approach of nature, where the cliffs meet the shore again. A path that integrates with nature, where the unique silhouette will continue along the shore, is designed with the infiltration of green into the shore. The terraces in front of the Maiden's Tower, inspired by the morphology of the cliffs, are integrated with the history of Uskudar, and it is aimed to bring it to its natural formation by supporting it with trees. This design imitating nature offers a coastal viewing area resistant to the strength of the Bosphorus and natural events. Salacak urban design competition is a national, free one-stage urban design competition opened by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Department of Studies and Projects in 2020. The Cliff Again project received an equivalent award in the competition and was declared the 1st as a result of the public vote.
