Abstract

Loneliness is a feeling any individual can experience in their lives. In the modern world, loneliness felt by individuals has increased as a result of using mobile phones, computers, internet which has been getting into their daily life along with the technological development. It can be regarded as the other way around, as if people gravitate to technology because of increased loneliness. Face-to-face communication has now given way to text messages and mutual conversation to online posts. All of these are paving the way to a society that is drifting away from one another gradually and is not even aware of this growing distance among them. While several factors may have an impact on emergence of feeling of loneliness, formative years of a person also comprises one of these factors. An individual who went through a troubled separation from his/her mother faces problems in his/her relationships in the following years and gets to know feeling of loneliness, and through the adolescence period is isolated from circle of friends, and during his/her old ages the feeling of loneliness revives again along with cases, such as losing close friends, the idea of settling in a nursing house or feeling him/herself useless. When various perspectives on loneliness analyzed, one time it appears to be an existential conflict and another time it is regarded as a feeling that arises at the point where the individual takes responsibility of his/her own life. However, regardless of causes, if the individual experiencing loneliness struggles with this problem for a long term, he/she is likely to confront several psychological issues. Therefore, the primary protective treatment methods for this problem are of great importance. Effective coping methods to be used by the individuals feeling lonely and referring those people to professionals when required may be adopted as secondary target approaches. It is considered that each and every step taken towards socialization from individualization will play a crucial role in saving and improving the mental health of the society.
