The development of scientific methods of research for the railways rolling stock

Abstract
The article is devoted to the historical-scientific analysis on scientific research development of the railways rolling stock. Experimental studies of the locomotives’ thermo technical and traction qualities played an important role in improving the design and operation of the locomotives throughout the history of railway technology development. These studies were carried out in the conditions of train operation. The world tendencies of steam-locomotive-building development show that both Ukrainian and foreign scientists were constantly eager to increase the combustion engineering parameters of steam locomotives. They tried to produce advanced designs for steam super-heaters, air-heaters, water-heaters and other units of steam locomotives aimed at their more efficient application. Railway-scientists, while solving the urgent railway industry problems, paid significant attention to the innovating ideas having revolutionary importance at those times and being of high topicality even now. The involvement of local scientists in carrying out tests at different stages of railway transport development has been shown. The problems appearing during the research and their solutions have been highlighted in the article. A brief history on the development of national locomotive-building industry has also been conducted.
