Journal Title: Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine - Year 2010, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Aim The available diagnostic tools in daily urology practice in our state hospital are direct x-ray and ultrasonography (US) examinations besides routine laboratory tests. We aimed to examine the benefi ts of urinary system US in our clinic and to discuss how we should be selective when ordering it. Material and Methods We examined the urinary system US reports of the patients admitted to our urology outpatients clinic between January 2007 and May 2008 in a retrospective way. US examinations were done by the same radiologist. Results 1453 women (58.8 %) and 1017 men (41.2%) were evaluated via urinary system US during the study period. Out of 2470 total patients, 1471 (59.6%) did not reveal any pathology, whereas, there were 1305 pathology addressed in the resting 999 patients (40.4%). The most common pathology was hydronephrosis (n=498, 20.2%) which was followed by urinary system stones (n=390, 15.8%) and renal cysts (n=199, 8.1%) in order. Conclusion Ultrasonography should be a priority method to be applied in evaluation of urinary system.
