The Dimension of Instructor’s Motivation in Foreign/Second Language Teaching
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Teaching Turkish (IJRTT) - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Foreign/second language teaching is a versatile field. Considering that the 21st-century requirements of language teaching are learner-centered, many studies focus on language learners. Foreign / second language teaching has many sub-research areas from language learners to a learning environment, materials used, curriculum, methods chosen from institutional culture, assessment and evaluation, and design of in-class activities. The instructors who organize all this teaching process and adapt themselves to the newly formed classroom climate each time and their professional motivation are an important research topic. Teaching foreign/second language education is limited if the teaching process under the guidance of instructors doesn't occur. The instructor is one of the most important elements in this process. In addition to the individual and professional qualifications of the teachers, material and method preferences in the course are important as well as their professional motivation as the motivation of language learners. Because those studies should be carried out to increase the motivation foreign/second language instructors and practices that have been created with a holistic perspective towards instructors should be included in educational environments. However, this could be happened only by highly motivated instructors and success can be expected from education. It is necessary to analyze the profile and conditions of foreign/second language instructors. Additionally, the analysis of the instructor’s profile is important since it is an analysis of the qualities directly reflected the students. In this study, based on motivation theories, previous studies on instructor’s motivation were searched and literature was reviewed within the framework of qualitatively patterned research method. Within the scope of the literature, the dimensions of the motivation of foreign/second language teachers were tried to be determined.
