The distribution of the major elements in the stream sediments from the Jijia River basin
Journal Title: Analele stiintifice ale Universitatii "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" din Iasi - seria Geologie - Year 2012, Vol 58, Issue 1
Abstract
The aims of the present study are to assess the normal variation limits of nine major chemical elements from the stream sediments of the Jijia river basin, as well as to explain the presence of any anomalous values. Statistical interpretation revealed that Al2O3, MgO, Na2O and K2O are normally distributed in the investigated sediments, while the Fe2O3 contents follow a log-normal distribution. The rest of the components (SiO2, TiO2, MnO and CaO) do not follow either normal or log-normal distributions, exhibiting anomalous values. The median values for the contents of most of the major components in the stream sediments from the Jijia river basin are close to both European and Romanian standards for stream sediments. The anomalous values recorded for certain components are determined either by lithological variations (in the case of SiO2), or by the specific fauna of the Sarmatian deposits (in the case of CaO). The geochemical background, calculated through several methods, has indicated the following values for the geochemical threshold: 71.06% SiO2, 0.94% TiO2, 19.15% Al2O3, 7.29% Fe2O3, 0.165% MnO, 2.87% MgO, 10.77% CaO, 2.39% Na2O, and 3.54% K2O.

Heavy metal contents of urban soils in parks of Iaşi, Romania
The determination of the heavy metal content of the soils of parks in major urban areas has become vital for the estimation of potential threats to public health. In order to assess the quality of the soils in the Copo...
Raman and infrared spectroscopy of kaersutite and certain common amphiboles
Raman and infrared spectral studies were performed on six natural minerals from the doublechain silicate group. We analyzed samples of grunerite, actinolite, tremolite, pargasite (+kaersutite) and riebeckite in order to...
The composition and source of the raw material of two stone axes of Late Bronze Age from Neamț County (Romania) - A Raman study
Two stone axes of Late Bronze Age from Moldova region (Romania) have been studied by Raman spectroscopy. The first axe (A1) belongs to the archaeological site Vînători (Neamț county). From a petrographic viewpoint, the s...
Sarmatian (Middle Miocene) Coastal Deposits in the Wedge-Top Depozone of the Eastern Carpathian Foreland Basin System. A Case Study
The deposits studied crop out in the Piemontan Hills south of the Vicovu de Jos village (Suceava County). For the first time, the sedimentological characteristics of these deposits (mainly sands with minor interlayers of...
The evolution of the Sarmatian palaeoclimate in North-Eastern Romania: A palaeobotanical approach
In the present paper, 24 palaeobotanical assemblages were analysed and, by applying the Coexistence Approach method, the MAT (Mean Annual Temperature), MAP (Mean Annual Precipitations), CMT (Coldest Month Mean Temperatur...
