''The Dog'' by E.-E. Schmitt and ''Julеs'' by D. Cauwelaert: the Dog as Other
Journal Title: Вісник Житомирського державного університету імені Івана Франка - Year 2017, Vol 83, Issue 1
Abstract
The article analyzes the philosophical understanding of the status and the role of the animal. Its interaction with the human has acquired special significance for specialists of the ethical and anthropological perspective in the 20th – 21st centuries. The demand of animal deanthropologization was due to both ethnology achievements and proven totalitarian ideologies that rejected the "subhuman." Therefore, in the interpretation of the status of the animal, the works of M. Heidegger, E. Levinas, G. Deleuze, F. Guattari, J. Derrida gained value. Besides, under pressure of the challenges of the 20th century, design of oneself and care about one’s future changed dramatically. Selfish fixation, hostility and indifference to Other had an impact on co-existence. Logic emphasis shift to the Other from "eidetic dialogue" which depends on the choice of oneself. "The Dog" by E.-E. Schmitt and "Jules" by D. Cauwelaert model such design of oneself, that is determined by Other. Sentimental Oedipal dog is just such Other. Without humanistic illusions about human, the dog leads to a critical reassessment of itself. Transcendentalism in the animal can be able to return a human to himself, to that challenge of immorality overcomes responsibility as a response that totality can be terminated by Other. Overcoming totality enables the release of "I" out of isolation inherent in oneself and from time stop, which means death. The fundamental ethical human experience - the experience of the face - realizes on the existential of kindness, thus avoiding the fear of closeness with Other. In the analyzed sources, just the dog as Other did not allow a person to become a "predatory creature", on the contrary, it retained a human in the human.
