The Economics and Sociology of Inequality: Empirical Evidence on Global Trends
Journal Title: Соціологія: теорія, методи, маркетинг - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue
Abstract
Over the past two decades, techniques for measuring inequality — both from an economic and a sociological perspective — have become far more precise. Nowadays, econometric methods of studying global inequality are developed by large research teams drawing on standardised official statistics along with household survey data, with the use of more and more sophisticated techniques for processing large amounts of information. The main conclusion is that since the 1980s inequality has been increasing in most countries and in the world as a whole — the phenomenon known as the Inequality. However, there is no empirical evidence on whether the deepening of global economic inequality is coupled with the rise of global social inequality. It is easier to determine and trace the relationship between social and economic stratification at a local level. Trans-institutionality and trans-culturality, as well as averaging and generalising at the global level, are outside the field of sociology. Instead, this area of knowledge has dealt with differences, heterogeneity and hierarchies that constitute the boundary beyond which its cognitive powers are abolished.
