THE EFFECT OF ACTIVE LEARNING ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTITUDES IN GEORAPHY TEACHING

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of active learning methods and traditional teaching methods on the geography achievement, attitudes with these at geography lessons in climate unit. Pretest-posttest experimental design with control group was used for the research. Active learning techniques were used for the experimental group and traditional teaching methods were used for the control group. The research was carried out at a high school which has a middle class socio-economic level. The students have been chosen among the students of the teacher who is the volunteer in the research. The data of the research were gathered with achievement test and scale for attitudes towards geography course. Mean, standard deviations, two-way analysis of variance (repeated measures) were used to analyze the data. At the end of the research, it has been yielded that active learning methods add to the geography achievement of the students. Furthermore, active learning methods and traditional teaching methods do not differ significantly students’ attitudes towards geography course. This conclusion indicates that students’ interest in and attitudes toward a course are resistant to change.
