Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 45

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to determine the effects of “creative drama” on Turkish speech anxiety of 8th grade students. The study was conducted using quantitative research methodology. In the study, pretest-posttest experimental design with control group was utilized. Study group included forty-two 8th grade students who were attending a public school at Van İpekyolu township in 2015-2016 academic year. The study group was determined with unbiased assignment and there were 20 students in the control group, while there were 22 students in the control. In analysis of study and control group data, which exhibited normal distribution, parametric independent samples t-test or related samples t-test statistics was used in study and control group data. Findings obtained with relation to the problem questions of the research were as follows: While there was no statistically significant difference between the study and control groups in Turkish speech anxiety achievements, in posttest scores, there was both numerically and statistically significant difference favoring the study group where creative drama activities were implemented. In other words, creative drama activities implemented with the study group were more successful in reducing Turkish speech anxiety of 8th grade students when compared to speech education activities organized based on Turkish curriculum. This finding established that creative drama activities should be used to reduce Turkish speech anxieties of students.
