The Effect of Different Type of Feeding Materials on Red California Worm Number and Weight
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF ANATOLIAN ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANIMAL SCIENCES - Year 2019, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Recycling of organic waste is extremely important for the sustainable use of natural resources. In recent years, research on organic waste in different sectors (compost, fertilizer, energy, etc.) has been going on. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of different types of feeding materials on the number and total weight of the red worm (Eisenia fetida). For this purpose, experiments were carried out according to the random trial design with four replicates in three diffrent feeding materials; A: hazelnut husk (100%); B: hazelnut husk (50%) + organic tea fiber (50%); C: hazelnut husk (30%) + organic tea fiber (30%) + cow fertilization (20%) + hornbeam sawdust (15%) + newspaper paper (5%) and Eisenia fetida were fed for 175 days. The highest number of worms were found at day 91 and in C feeding materials; while the lowest number of worms was found at day 175 and in B feeding materials. It was determined that the difference between the B and C feeding materials was statistically significant in terms of worm number. In the time dependent change of worm number, it was found that the difference between the feeding materials was statistically significant (p <0.05). The change in the average weight of 1 worm in different feeding materials was irregular.
