The Effect of Distance English Teaching on Learners’ Academic Achievement

Abstract

In this research, academic achievement and anxiety towards foreign language in formal and distance English teaching were investigated. For this purpose, it was aimed to reveal the anxiety levels of foreign language concerns of the Formal and Distance Education students, to compare the levels of anxiety and to compare the academic achievements of the English language courses of Formal and Distance Education students. In the study, Pre-Posttest Control Group Model and Untreated Groups pretest posttest design were used in experimental research designs. Within the scope of the study, data were collected by the application of two different measuring instruments. In the study, low level and not meaningful relations between foreign language course anxiety and posttest achievement averages of experimental and control groups were determined. As a result of the research, the academic achievement of the control group was significantly higher than the experimental group. The fact that the students in the experimental group had decreased according to the pretest scores in their posttest scores was interpreted as the fact that the pretest was made on the system within the framework of the related legislation and that the students could have been helped by the pretest. For this reason, it is recommended to make changes in the legislation in order to prevent such copying and helping events in the distance education system, all the examinations should be done in the form of paper pens and in the physical environment of the registered program. Although the medium-level anxiety education sciences are a desirable situation for the field literature, it has been determined that there is no situation that would make a difference in terms of academic achievement in the middle level of this research. It is necessary to carry out more detailed studies on the causes of this situation.
