The Effect of Educational Program based on BASNEF Model on the Nutritional behavior of Pregnant Women

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 12

Abstract

Proper maternal nutrition during pregnancy is related to her success in pregnancy, childbirth, and health and growth of the embryo. Accordingly, the present study aims to determine the effect of educational intervention based on BASNEF model on the nutritional behavior of pregnant women. In this quasi-experimental intervention study, 280 nulliparous women were selected through stratified-cluster sampling. Next, they were randomly included in two experimental and control groups. The educational program was designed based on stages of BASNEF model. The educational content was developed based on patients’ educational needs. Educational intervention was held during eight 90-minute sessions based on the components of BASNEF model, and mothers in the control group received the routine prenatal instructions. The data collection was conducted in three steps: pretest, immediate test, and post-test 6 weeks later. The data were analyzed using SPSS-16 (Chi-square, paired T, independent T, variance analysis, Freidman, and Mann-Whitney).There was a significant difference between the mean scores of knowledge, attitude, enabling factors, and subjective norms in the experimental group after the intervention. Relation between the mean scores of nutritional behavior in experimental and control groups before the intervention wasn’t significant (P=0.238); however, it was significant after the intervention (P<0.01).According to the results of this study, nutritional behavior training based on BASNEF model in pregnant mothers will develop nutritional behavior during pregnancy. Therefore, holding the classes mentioned above is recommended to all pregnant mothers.
