THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON THE PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS OF ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PEPPERMINT (MENTHA PIPERITA L.)
Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 8
Abstract
Seeds of peppermint cultivar (Mentha piperita L.) were irradiated with 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 kRad gamma rays for determining the effectiveness of different doses of irradiation on growth characters and determination of total volatile oils and their main active constituents in all treatments. Phytochemical screening showed that the dose of 4 k-Rad gave moderate concentrations of - terpinene(3.6%),Menthone(15.04%) and Menthol (45.98%).Furthermore, the lowest dose of 2 k-Rad gave the highest concentrations of As-limonene(3.8%), Transanethol (4.07%),decanol(3.62%) and Juniperin (4.62%). For the pharmaceutical effects, it was clear that, gamma rays treatments resulted in increasing most of essential oil constituents against control except camphin which did not increased by gamma rays treatments. DNA fingerprint resulted in 60 number of amplicons by dose of 8 k-Rad , followed by the dose of 2 K-Rad 59amplicons, while the doses of 10k-Rad and 6 K-Rad gave 55 and 53amplicons, respectively, meanwhile the least number of amplicons was recorded by the dose of 4 K-Rad (47amplicons).Variation in DNA of the irradiated seeds in comparison with the control was successfully assessed using marker assisted selection concept.
