The effect of mexidol on certain blood counts in experimental lung emphysema

Abstract

Objective — to study the effect of succinate containing mexidol on catalase activity and sorption capacity of erythrocytes in experimental pulmonary emphysema. Materials and methods. Studies were performed on 64 mature, white rats weighing 180—200 g. The model of papainic emphysema in animals was reproduced by a singledose intratracheal administration of papain, dissolved in 0.9 % NaCl solution at the rate of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg. Mexidol was administered at a dose of 25 mg/kg intramuscularly daily within 2 and 3 weeks after administration of papain. The catalase activity and the sorption capacity of erythrocytes were determined. Results and discussion. It was found that emphysema is accompanied by inhibition of catalase activity with a significant decrease of erythrocytes sorption capacity, regardless of the dose of papain. Administration of Mexidol to animals within 2 and 3 weeks at a dose of 25 mg/kg leads to the restoration of catalase activity and increase the sorption capacity of erythrocytes. There was no complete restoration of the sorption capacity of erythrocytes in comparison with the control value. At the same time, in animals receiving mexidol, the sorption capacity was significantly higher than that of nontreated animals. Conclusions. Emphysematous process in the lungs leads to inhibition of catalase activity, accompanied by a decrease of the erythrocyte’s sorption capacity. Mexidol, administered to the animal during 2 and 3 weeks, restores catalase activity and increase sedimentation of erythrocytes.
