THE EFFECT OF MOTORWAY BUILDING ON COMMON ROCK RAW MATERIAL RESOURCES AND MINING IN POLAND

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2010, Vol 439, Issue 439

Abstract

Presented paper is dedicated to several aspects of rock raw material management and production of natural crushed aggregates used in road building. The analysis of domestic basis of mineral raw material shows the theoretically huge amount of those in the whole countryscale, but high insufficiency in the regional and local scale. The reason of such situation is unequal spatial distribution of the mineral deposits as well as growing restrictions of those availability and mining limited by environmental protection, land use planning and the related ownership rights. Also because the high cost of the raw material transportation the part of demand is covered by import or substitutes (for example in the central Poland natural aggregates coming from lignite deposits overburden). Detailed analysis made for chosen motorway sections show the general development of the whole region involved in a building. Decrease of common mineral commodity is balanced by increase of new deposits and growth of geological research. There is a necessity of multilevel activity to minimize negative impact caused by fast and large scale exploitation. The recognition of mineral deposits is the component of general knowledge of geology of Poland. The costs of regional reconnaissance and preliminary prospecting should be covered from public funds. Their results can be presented to investors for detailed exploration and mining.
