The effect of sorbic acid on the microbiota composition of the rats colon content and its metabolites

Journal Title: Біологія тварин - Year 2015, Vol 17, Issue 4

Abstract

The effect preservative sorbic acid on the quantitative and qualitative composition of the rats’ colon microbiota and the products of its life, including short chain fatty acids (SFA), were studied. The introduction (intragastric) sorbic acid to rats 25 mg/kg of body weight leads to decrease of the microorganisms amount of Lactobacillus and Candida on the 7th day, Escherichia (lac+), Enterococcus, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides and Candida — on 11th day, and also bacteria Eubacterium spp. — on 14th day of experiment, compared to this amount in the control group. The quantitative content of bacteria Peptococcus, Streptococcus and Peptostreptococcus (on 7th day), Clostridium, Fusobacterium (on 11th day), Staphylococcus, Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Proteus (on 14th day) increases compared to the values of this index in control animals in these conditions. We proved the genus Escherichia (lac-) and bacteria Klebsiella spp.in the rats’ colon microbiota at injected sorbic acid. The total number SFA in the colon contents on 14th day reduced by 19.6 % at the oral administration sorbic acidto rats compared with their level in the cavity of the colon of rats of the experimental group on 4th day of the experiment. These changes are mainly due to the reduction of acetic, propionic and isovaleric acids.
