The effect of sulphur fertilization on chemical composition of seeds of different breeding forms of winter oilseed rape in the conditions of diverse nitrogen rates

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2011, Vol 32, Issue 1

Abstract

The experiment was carried out in order to investigate the effect of sulphur fertilization (0, 15, 30 i 60 kg S·ha-1) in diverse nitrogen (60, 120 i 180 kg N·ha-1) fertilization conditions on the content of fat, protein and glucosinolates in seeds and fatty acid composition in oil of different breeding forms of winter oilseed rape. The subjects of laboratory investigation were seeds of three cultivars from three-year experiment performed in 2006–2008.The effect of spring nitrogen and sulphur fertilization on quantitative characteres of seeds and oil in all studied cultivars in the experiment was similar. The applied doses of nitrogen (60–180 N·ha-1) caused the reduction of fat and the increase of protein content. The moderate dose of nitrogen (120 N·ha-1) increased the indol glucosinolate content (mainly 4–hydroksyglucobrassicin) as well as the share of linoleic, linolenic, eicosenic acids in oil and reduced the share of oleic acid. Sulphur fertilization mainly influenced the growth of glucosinolate content and the decrease of the fat content and increase of the protein content in seeds. The application of sulphur did not influence significantly the content of 7 basic fatty acids in oil. The interaction of nitrogen and sulphur was not observed in the formation of fat and protein content in seeds and fatty acid composition in oil of the studied oilseed rape varieties.Environmental conditions had a significant effect on the studied quantitative characters of seeds and oil. The differences in fat between years were over 7%, and of the protein over 3% in advantage to 2008 and 2007 respectively. The cultivars differed significantly in the content of protein, glucosinolate and fat as well as all studied fatty acids.
