THE EFFECT OF THE KIND AND CONCENTRATION OF POLYVINYLPYRROLIDONE ON SELECTED TRIBOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 237, Issue 3

Abstract

The subject of the physicochemical and tribological studies were two kinds of polyvinylpyrrolidones with the degrees of polymerization of 450 (PVP 450) and 14,400 (PVP 14,400). A significant effect of the degree of polymerization on the quantities determined was found. The effect of the kind of compound on viscosity (ν) is particularly important. The ν value for long-chain polymers was over 10 times higher. The polyvinylpyrrolidones studied can be classified as surface-active compounds. However, changes in the surface tension and wettability of steel surfaces by their aqueous solutions relative to water are not as big as in the case of solutions of non-polymer surfactants. The determination of the kind and concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidones on tribological characteristics of their aqueous solutions was particularly important. A significant, about twofold, decrease in the coefficient of friction (μ), relative to water, was found with higher μ values being observed for the PVP 14,400 solutions. An increase in the degree of polymerization affects wear particularly negatively. Wear scar diameter values (d) are even 1.8 times lower for shorter-chain polyvinylpyrrolidone solutions than for water; whereas, in the case of longer-chain polymer solutions, the d values are comparable with those obtained for water. The analysis of the results obtained unequivocally indicates that an increase in the degree of polymerization of polyvinylpyrrolodones has a negative effect on motion resistance and, particularly, on wear. At this stage of research, neither of the additives used has been definitely excluded. Tribological tests will be extended to other friction conditions.
