The Effect of Theological Paradigm in the Interpretation of the Verses Related to Creation

Journal Title: Marife Dini Araştırmalar Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Allah almighty, while emphasizing tawheed in the Holy Quran from start to finish, has mentioned a great number of Quranic-rational proofs for anyone rational and responsible, that there is the owner and creator of the universe of beings who has mentioned many Qur’anic/rational evidences, which reveal the creation of all and the balance between mankind and all things created with him. In the Qur’an, the verses related to creation clearly reveal, within their contexts, the unquestionable existence of Allah and his undeniable power and his omnipotence in creation. The Qur’an reveals that nothing is a coincidence in the universe and that a creator must exist, through examples of human creation and creation of non-human beings. In the examples in question, the following topics are given as evidences for the existence of God: The creation of human being, created when he is nothing, and other beings such as sun, moon, stars, skies, earth, etc., which are incomparable with humankind in size, as well as the harmony between all and the fact that he has subjected to people all beings. The Holy Qur’an explains to people the unity and power of the supreme creator with a number of evidences addressing people by perspective of mind and thought. Some commentators showed different approaches to these proofs about creation. One of the important reasons of this different approach is kalami (theological) paradigm. In this paper, the approach of Qadi Abd al-Jabbar, one of the important commentators of the Muʿtazili Kalam school, to the verses about creation is discussed. We tried to find out how effective the paradigm and sect principles were that the exegete has had, in understanding and interpreting the verses proving the existence of Allah and about everything created in the universe with humankind.
