Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. Back pain, especially in the lower segment of the spine, is one of the most frequent complaints within the musculoskeletal system, therefore, the methods of effective treatment and prevention of this condition are being sought all the time. One of such approaches may involve application of hatha yoga. The aim of the study was an assessment of hatha yoga effectiveness in alleviation of low back pain complaints due to overload.Material and methods. The total of 52 (36 female and 16 male) subjects, suffering from overload-related low back pain were studied. The average age of the subjects was 37.19 ±9.83 years. Thes were the beginners who enrolled in hatha yoga classes in one of the Warsaw yoga schools. The total of 30 sessions of one-hour hatha yoga meetings were conducted with evaluation of pain complains before and after the whole series of meetings. For the evaluation of pain the author’s questionnaire form, visual-analogue VAS scale and modified Laitinen’s pain questionnaire were used. Results. Among the 52 subjects with back pain before the hatha yoga classes, 21 reported relief of pain after a series of exercises (p<0.05). The average intensity of pain, measured in VAS scale was 3.66 (± 1.77) before the examination and 2.55 (± 1.28) after a series of hatha yoga classes (p = 0.001). After the hatha yoga classes a significant reduction of painkillers intake was also noted, regardless the so far taken doses of these medications (p<0.05), as well as an improvement of the self-control of body posture.Conclusions. After hatha yoga trainings sessions, a significant reduction pain in the whole low back segment was observed as well as the reduction of analgesics taken by the subjects. These beneficial effects of the applied exercises justify using hatha yoga as an effective method of pain reduction and a valuable element of low back pain prophylaxis. In this aspect, it is essential to promote hatha yoga as an effective, easily accessible and cost-effective approach, allowing to eliminate or reduce pain.
