ESTIMATION OF THE BODY POSTURE IN GIRLS AND BOYS RELATED TO THEIR BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. The aim of the paper was comparison of body postures in girls and boys, depending on their body mass, determined by the Body Mass Index (BMI).Material and methods. 210 girls and 185 boys aged 7-13 years were selected for the study. Body posture was evaluated using photogrammetry. The analysis included alignment of the spinous processes, shoulders, waist triangles, pelvis and spine in the sagittal plane. BMI values were calculated using centile charts. The children were divided according to their gender and age, and further, according to the obtained BMI values into weight categories – underweight, normal, overweight and obese.Results. Evaluation of the spine in the sagittal plane showed only few cases of deviations in the aligment of spinous processes, which were statistically insignificant. In children with a normal body mass, more asymmetry was found in shoulder and waist triangle alignment, while pelvis positioning was more correct. The biggest differences were observed between the groups with different BMI centile values in spine alignment in the sagittal plane. Overweight children were diagnosed with the deepening of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis, while the children with normal BMI values were mostly characterized by a correct posture in this plane.Conclusions. The results indicate the prevalence of postural defects both in children with a normal body mass and overweight or underweight ones. Deepening of antero-lateral curvatures is bigger in obese and overweight children.
