The Effects of Vitamin D and Calcium levels On Pregnant Women with Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences (IOSR-JDMS) - Year 2018, Vol 17, Issue 10

Abstract

Background : Vitamin D deficiency has a close relation with hyperemesis gravidarum and serum calcium level. The study objective was to investigate the levels of vitamin D and calcium in pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum and their effects on their obstetric health. Subjects & Methods: This is a crosssectional study including 97 pregnant participants with hyperemesis gravidarum. The demographic data was collected by well-trained researcher following a structured questionnaire after obtaining their verbal consent (maternal age, residency, marital, socioeconomic states, educational and occupation states, previous and current obstetrical history and body mass index)were collected. Laboratory Investigations were done with estimation of vitamin D and calcium. Results:The deficient vitamin D among participant was 84% and low calcium was 54% .There was no significant difference with high correlation between women with low vitamin D and those with normal regarding status of pregnancy (r=1.0). On the other hand, there was no significant difference with weak correlation between women with low vitamin D and calcium regarding the parity (vitamin D:r=0.46,p=0.52;calcium:r=0.03,p=0.88). There were non-significant high correlation between anemia and dietary history and women with deficient vitamin D and low calcium. Moreover, women with normal vitamin D and calcium were less likely to report a history of miscarriage (vitamin D:p=0.18,calcium:p=0.15). Conclusion:There was relationship between vitamin D deficiency and hyperemesis gravidarum with low calcium that might be associated with the insignificantly increasing the complication of pregnancy like miscarriage and fetal death. Furthermore, pre-pregnancy dietary intake might influence the severity of hyperemesis gravidarum during following pregnancy.
