THE EU-COUNTRIES POPULATION INCOME DIFFERENTIATION

Abstract

In the article the author points out that the special attention of the international community is paid to the socio-economic development of the EU countries, also its "eastern expansion", the assessment of the consequences of the new member states for their political, social and economic development. The author conducted an analysis of theoretical approaches to the determination of the indicator which could assess the level of economic welfare, but it showed lack of a single integrated indicator. Among the factors that determine the country in the system of social origin and influence on its economic development the level of income is defined. The countries are differentiated by the year of EU membership – before 2004 and after 2004. A statistical analysis of variations in EU member states by the Gini coefficient for 2005-2015 is made. The estimated coefficients of variation showed that during the researched period countries were characterized by middle-income population differentiation, and the stability of these factors indicates the absence of significant changes in the distribution of countries according to the Gini coefficient. In the groups of countries the meaning of the coefficients of variation is quite similar but slightly higher in the second group, that shows larger differences in income levels. In the first group the coefficients of variation for 2005-2015 decreased significantly, while in the second – increased, so the dynamics trends of the countries differentiation by the Gini coefficient are opposite – in the first group was decreasing, and in the second – growth. The highest growth rate of the Gini coefficient in 2005-2015 was typical for Germany, Denmark, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, and the highest rate of decline – in Portugal, Poland, Slovakia and other countries. It is proved that during the researched period there was a convergence between the first and the second groups. The analysis of the dynamics of socio-economic stratification of the EU countries showed that the European Union has managed to achieve some results on real convergence of its members.
