THE EVALUATION OF BASIC OPHTHALMOLOGICAL AND LARYNGOLOGIC EXAMINATIONS MADE BY SPORTS PHYSICIANS VERSUS SPECIALISTS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2011, Vol 27, Issue 3

Abstract

The study prospectively analyzes a group of athletes examined by a sports physician. The point was to determine ophthalmological or laryngologic contraindications to practice sports. The study prospectively analyzes a group of 500 athletes. The sports physician performed the initial qualification for the group with no ophthalmological or laryngologic contraindications to practice sports. Qualification to this group was made on the basis of an extended medical history taking and physical examination, including Snellen visual acuity test, whisper screening heating acuity test and the Fleck’s sense of equilibrium test. Tests were considered normal when no signs of significant deviations from normal values were observed The sports physician stated the ability to play sports when medical screening revealed normal results. In a further step the entire group of athletes has been examined by specialists: an ophthalmologist and a laryngologist. Every athlete who was initially given a positive statement from sport physician, has later got a positive statement from ophthalmologist and laryngologist. 1. Extended family medical history interview, physical examination, Snellen visual acuity test, whisper screening heating acuity test and the Fleck’s sense of equilibrium test are sufficient to exclude basic ocular and aural patologies in athletes. 2. Full compliance between the positive initial sports physician’s statement and other specialist’s statements has been achieved. 3. In order to make more efficient use of public financial resources in Polish health system it seems reasonable to leave a decision about ophtalmological and laryngologic specialist consultation in athletes to the sports physician instead of standing Ministry of Health regulations.
