The evaluation of caries-risk factors among the students of 1st and 2nd year of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin.

Abstract
Introduction. Dental caries is one of many diseases of modern civilization and it is commonly presented in the human environment. Preventive activity an treatment of caries depends on suitable classification patients to group of different risk of caries. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to evaluate factors of caries risk among students of I and II year at a faculty of dentistry of Pomeranian Medical University. Material and methods. Questionnaire survey and clinical examination was taken in the Department of Restorative Dentistry Pomeranian Medical University. 158 students was examined, 117 female and 41 male. The status of caries was determined using the DMF index and evaluation of presence of active caries lesions. The status of dental hygiene was examined by the Plaque Control Record (PCR) index, Approximal Plaque Index (API), Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI). Anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted to evaluate health behaviour of patients, which consists of questions concerning oral hygiene, fluoride prophylaxis and diet habits. Results. The average value of DMF index was 11,39. Half of examined students had API between 27-70%. Dental plaque covered all teeth surface in 20%. Dental plaque covered more than 20% teeth surfaces in more then 90% examined persons. In 38% bleeding after probing gingival pockets was observed during clinical examination. Conclusion. The research proofed that individual preventive plan and treatment plan should be provided for each person and must be based on accurate evaluation of caries risk.
