The formation of the "person’s age" notion in lingual-semantic highlighting

Abstract

The article deals with the formation of the "person’s age" notion in lingual-semantic highlighting. Particular attention is drawn to the historical and semantic analysis of English labels for indicating the age of a person. The problem of the chosen theme is determined by the orientation of modern linguistic studies within the cognitive-discursive paradigm on the objective setting of the peculiarities of mental and verbal resources of the language to denote the main anthropological features of a person including the notion of age. The notion of "age" is in the centre of studies of many human sciences and its social and physical being, among which, first of all, psychology, pedagogy, sociology, philosophy, culture and philology. The data obtained in the course of our research confirm that the notion of "age" plays an important role in the conceptualization of the world because on the basis of representations, knowledge, assessments associated with the age periods of person’s life, there is an understanding of various phenomena of reality. Thus, the research results prove that "person’s age" denotes an extremely important fragment of extra-ordinary reality which appears in the English-language picture of the world in connection with the fundamental categories of time, life and death. Based on the results of our research it can be concluded that the content of the "person’s age" notion has national, cultural and historical peculiarities. Comprehensiveness of the age-old sign gives the reason to consider "age" as the cognitive dominant of any culture and is actualized in the discursive space of culture by appropriate verbal and non-verbal means
