THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE VEGETATION ON THE AREA BETWEEN THE BUYUK MENDERES RIVER AND THE DALAMAN STREAM
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 49
Abstract
Located to the southwest of Anatolia, the area of investigation is composed of such plant communities whose boundaries are determined by ecological conditions as sub-humid forest communities, dry forests, scrub and alpine plant communities. Sub-humid forest communities represented by Castanea sativa trees cover the area along the northern slopes of Babadağ and Akdağ masses and the river valleys meeting the Büyük Menderes River. Together with these forests, the relict species peculiar to the Black Sea region that involve Cornus mas, Corylus avellana, Populus tremula and Sorbus torminalis which settled in this area due to climatic changes in the Pleistocene are found localized in the area as well. The dominant elements of dry forests which are more common across the area are Pinus brutia at the lower levels and Pinus nigra at the upper levels. These forests are followed by those forests of Juniperus and Cedrus libani as the elevation increases. In Turkey, Liquidambar orientalis, an endemic and relict species of Tersiyer, is found to concentrate in Dalaman and Akçay Valleys, especially in the areas where underground water level is near the surface.
