THE GHOST OF OLEG THE SEER
Journal Title: Tractus aevorum: эволюция социокультурных и политических пространств - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
This research represents an attempt to reconstruct the real image of Prince Oleg the Seer by separating historical facts from historiographical myths based on Scandinavian, Moravian and Khazar-Karaite epics, some of which have been falsified. The juxtaposition of these materials with the chronicles reveals inherent contradictions in space and time, and demonstrates that any attempt to reconcile the two is misguided. Particular attention is paid to the to the Hungarian factor in Oleg’s politics, and to the mistaken dating of Oleg the Seer`s activities to the mid-tenth century.
