The History of the Settlement of the Central Black Earth Region in the Area of Russian-Ukrainian Contacts

Abstract
Two major ethnic groups historically inhabited in the Central Black Earth Region: Russians and Ukrainians. Areas densely populated by Ukrainians are in Voronezh, Belgorod, Kursk regions. Such ethno-cultural context, of course, has an impact on the traditional culture of the region. That is why the study of the traditional culture of the Black Earth Region is impossible without an understanding of the origin of Ukrainians living here and their role in the development of the region. The question of settlement of the Central Black Earth Region (in the XVII century – "Field") was comprehensively studied by both Russian and Ukrainian historians. On the basis of their works and historical documents, the article identifies three main stages of relations between the two ethnic groups in the study area: 1) old Russian community; 2) isolation of ethnic groups; 3) rapprochement during the colonization of the "Field". The role of Slobodian Cossack regiments in the settlement of the Western regions of the Black Earth Region, which later received the name "Slobozhanshchina", is considered. The history of the origin of exonyms and ethnonyms such as Cherkassy, Ruthenians, Ukrainians, Khokhly, Muscovites, as well as the problem of ethnic self-identification of Ukrainians living in the Western regions of the Central Black Earth Region are studied. This article serves as a preamble to the further consideration of the Russian-Ukrainian interaction in The Central Black Earth Region
