THE IMPACT OF COMPETITION ON THE DYNAMICS OF CHANGES IN THE RESPIRATORY AND CARDIOVASCULAR PARAMETERS OF RALLY DRIVERS AND PILOTS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Being capable of efficient performance of activities in the car cockpit at high HR is only possible in well-trained humans with efficient cardiovascular systems. In another case, the risk of serious health complications would be high. The reports in the world literature on the impact of physical effort associated with participation in a car race on the cardiorespiratory system are very scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of physical effort associated with participation in a car rally on selected indicators of cardiorespiratory parameters.Material and methods. The study was conducted during the Polish Rally Cup. The study involved 17 men: 9 drivers and 8 pilots. The assessment of ventilation rates was performed before the start and at the race finish line at rest. The lung test was performed with the use of spirometry. The measurements of blood pressure and heart rate at rest were also performed.Results. There were no statistically significant differences between the group of pilots and the group of racing drivers. Student's t-test for dependent samples showed statistically significant differences regarding diastolic blood pressure and FVC before the start and at the finish. A decline in both parameters was observed.Conclusions. 1. Stress and physical fatigue associated with car rallies significantly affect the reduction in forced vital capacity. 2. Physiological, physical and mental factors that play an important role during rallies affect the reduction in diastolic blood pressure. 3. There are no significant diffe rences in the cardiorespiratory parameters between pilots and drivers participating in car rallies.
