BODY PERCEPTION AND BODY SATISFACTION IN CULTURALLY HOMOGENOUS ENVIRONMENT OF ROWERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. Cultural homogeneity of environment is determined by the level of uniformity of cultural values and social norms. In homogenous environment the number of cultural models is small, standards are compatible, norms are simple and unambiguous, and access to dissimilar values is reduced. This situation exists among high-level athletes who spend months in sport centers. Such conditions can influence social comparison process. The issue was raised if the cultural homogeneity of sport environment affected body perception and body satisfaction in athletes.Material and methods. Eighty four rowers (30 females and 54 males) training in the Olympic Center and 244 female and male students of the Academy of Physical Education and Warsaw School of Social Psychology filled out the modified Body Satisfaction Scale, the Color-A-Person Body Dissatisfaction Test, the Silhouettes Test and a questionnaire including data for BMI-real and BMI-ideal.Results. All subjects – rowers and students, males and females – desired to be taller. Males from both groups wanted to weigh more; females – less. The rowers had different and more homogenous ideal body standards than students. And even if they did not match the standards, they were generally more satisfied with their bodies than students. The level of satisfaction depended on age and sex of oarsmen. The least satisfied but the most concerned about their body were junior athletes. The most satisfied were the oldest men. Body satisfaction in sportswomen was lower than in men, and comparable to female students.Conclusions. In culturally homogenous sport environment men are more satisfied with their bodies than men from more variable environment. This phenomenon was not observed among women.
