PERCEPTION OF REAL AND SUBJECTIVE RISK OF DOPING IN SPORT

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aspect of doping concerning psychological mechanisms underlying risky decisions is not well recognized in literture. “Doping Risk Perception” scale (by H. Mroczkowska) was developed to describe decision-making process involved in use of doping drugs or in resigning from them.Material and methods. Data based on the scale included there domains: assessment of real probability of respected values loss, subjective probability of respected values loss and the extent of loss (personal ranking of valued goods). Examined subjects were Sport Championship School students (N=46, mean age ~17 years, mean training period ~6 years).Results. The results revealed high level of intragroup coherence in systematisation of values respected by young athletes. The data show, that, against common opinion about consumption-targeted value system of youth, young people declare that they would accept the loss of material gratuity much easier than the loss of personal integrity (physical and mental health) or social respect. The data suggest, that greater protection of personal than material goods reflects the young persons’ perception of life in long time perspective – supposedly they would accept the loss of values with immediate consequences (medal, scored position, appearance) easier than the loss of values with delayed consequences, even such long-term, that their negative signs are elusive or directly imperceptible. In threat of valued goods loss, every value which can be lost seems to be equally important, and protective attitudes in accepted level of personal risk are observed.Conclusions. Knowledge and convictions concerning negative consequences of doping have no transposition on decision-making processess and there is no transsituational integrity between objectively and subjectively accepted risk. Whatsmore, in opinion of respondents, the relative risk of doping detection is not high (~50%), which suggests that gaps and shortcomings in anti-doping control create real temptation to make use of them.
