SELF-IMAGE OF SILHOUETTE IN WOMEN PRACTICING FITNESS AND ITS CORRELATES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to determine the self-image of silhouette and its acceptance among adult women practicing fitness, and the relationships between these factors and objective parameters of the body, training parameters and body satisfaction.Material and methods. The study included 277 women aged 18 to 35 years, practicing fitness from 1 year to 14 years in Warsaw fitness clubs. The modified versions of psychological tests: Figure Rating Scale (FRS), the Body Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and the author’s tailored questionnaire were used.Results. Woman practicing fitness mostly wanted to be slimmer by one-two figures on the scale and were convinced that women’s ideal silhouette was thinner than their own silhouette. The older was the respondent and the greater was her declared weight and BMI, the more stout figure was indicated as her current and ideal body shape, but also the greater was the discrepancy between the ideal, normative silhouette and the silhouette believed to be attractive to men. The more stout was the current silhouette and the more different it was from the ideal, normative and attractive to men body shapes, the greater was the respondents’ dissatisfaction with general characteristics of her body, torso and motor characteristics.Conclusions. The results suggested that the ideal silhouette of young women involved in fitness is at least partially adapted to their current look and less restrictive than the perceived social pattern. Dissatisfaction with one’s own body is strongly conditioned by the degree of discrepancy between the model and the real appearance than by the current look.
