Journal Title: Psychiatria i Psychoterapia - Year 2011, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

The treatment of bulimia should be carried out in various ways and requires a collaboration of multidisciplinary team, which increasingly emphasize the dietitian and nutritional intervention role, both in the course of diagnosis and throughout the patient's treatment. Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder, characterized by recurrent attacks of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors. This disorder is distinguished by an unbalanced diet and poor eating habits, which contributes to inadequate intake of many nutrients. Lack of the energy and poor nutritional status are often the main reason of persistence the bulimic behavior. Metabolic, nutritional and clinical disorders arising in the course of the disease are mainly the result of starvation and purging behaviors. The main targets for dietitian in the treatment of bulimia are: normalization of nutritional status, increase the diversity of food intake and propagate the dietary education. Proper nutrition intervention should be preceded by an assessment of diet, nutritional status and the demand for energy and basic nutrients consumption of each patient. The cooperation between nutritionist, psychotherapist and physician should consist planning of individually defined diet including adequate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, water, electrolytes, minerals and vitamins, for every individual patient.
