THE INFLUENCE OF A SKELETAL CARBON STRUCTURE ON THE TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF COMPOSITE WITH AN ALUMINIUM MATRIX

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 263, Issue 5

Abstract

This paper presents the influence of the skeletal structure of glassy carbon foam on the tribological properties of composite materials. During the research, carbon foams produced in the laboratory were used as a reinforcement. The proper level of the porosity of the skeletal structure gave an opportunity for the infiltration of liquid aluminium. For manufactured composites, the coefficient of friction and wear level were measured as a result of tribological investigations. The measurements revealed the influence of the porosity and quality of foams on the coefficient of friction and level wear ratio. During X-ray studies of external parts of the friction surface, the specific behaviour of carbon foam was discovered. The worn carbon phases are smeared on the friction surface, creating thin lubricating layer. This carbon layer plays a protective role against progressive wear and lead to the stabilisation of friction coefficient values.
